Journeys in Sound presents
From Turkey by way of Brooklyn featuring the debut area appearance of Dolunay plus very special guest Layth Sidiq & friends
Together since 2011, the Brooklyn, NY based trio Dolunay (Turkish for “full moon”) draws upon the songs from the Turkish people living across Rumeli, the former region of the Ottoman Balkans. Dolunay’s intimate sound, sparse in loudness and textured with the dissonance of eastern blues, gives way to a sound at once earthy and celestial, the size of which defies that of the small makeup of the band.
Inspired to engage with the unique repertoire of lesser-known songs and empowered with a knack to enrich the uncovered sounds with a personal note, Dolunay creates the opportunity to breathe new life into melodies of a region culturally diverse and historically rich.
Dolunay features:
Jenny Luna (voice, percussion)
Eylem Basaldi (violin)
Adam Good (ud)

Sharing the bill with Dolunay will be the gifted violinist Layth Sidiq, who put together a well received Arabic music workshop/clinic for Journeys in Sound back in September 2014. Layth was born in Bagdad and raised in Amman, Jordan. He is s leading Middle Eastern violinist on the world music stage and has performed with a wide range of musical luminaries such as AR Rahman, Simon Shaheen, & Ron Carter, to name a few.
