Two amazing groups:

Dolunay NYC

Oud,Violin and percussion/Voice

“The Brooklyn, NY based trio Dolunay (Turkish for “full moon”) draws upon the songs from the Turkish people living across Rumeli, the former region of the Ottoman Balkans. Dolunay’s intimate sound, sparse in loudness and textured with the dissonance of eastern blues, gives way to a sound at once earthy and celestial, the size of which defies that of the small makeup of the band. Inspired to engage with the unique repertoire of lesser-known songs and empowered with a knack to enrich the uncovered sounds with a personal note, Dolunay creates the opportunity to breathe new life into melodies of a region culturally diverse and historically rich.”

Svitanya

“SVITANYA is a women’s vocal ensemble whose enchanting performance of Eastern European folk music has captivated audiences across the northeast US. Our mission is to bring this beautiful music to a wide range of audiences – from those who are familiar through their ancestral roots to those who are encountering it for the first time.

Svitanya’s repertoire is drawn from the entire region of Eastern Europe. Some songs are modern arrangements of traditional folktunes, some are original compositions in the folk tradition, and others are sung as they have been for generations. They range from strong and strident field-working songs to traditional dance tunes to lush and emotive arrangements, all evoking the timbres, rhythms, and harmonies indigenous to the region.”
